- Employee floored after discovering shocking item in waste bin at their office: ‘Sad’on 2025-03-29 at 17:25
While placing the keyboard in the e-waste bin was far better than tossing it in the trash, as e-waste recycling can recover valuable materials and aid with resource management, finding a new home for the item would have been much better given that it was in mint condition. An employee was stunned when they discovered an IBM keyboard in mint condition in their company’s e-waste bin, meaning the keyboard disposal was a lost opportunity to recoup cash for a still usable product likely worth hundreds of dollars.
- REFINE: Inversion-Free Backdoor Defense via Model Reprogramming – IBM Researchon 2025-03-29 at 04:44
Backdoor attacks on deep neural networks (DNNs) have emerged as a significant security threat, allowing adversaries to implant hidden malicious behaviors during the model training phase. Pre-processing-based defense, which is one of the most important defense paradigms, typically focuses on input transformations or backdoor trigger inversion (BTI) to deactivate or eliminate embedded backdoor triggers during the inference process. However, these methods suffer from inherent limitations: transformation-based defenses often fail to balance model utility and defense performance, while BTI-based defenses struggle to accurately reconstruct trigger patterns without prior knowledge. In this paper, we propose REFINE, an inversion-free backdoor defense method based on model reprogramming. REFINE consists of two key components: \textbf{(1)} an input transformation module that disrupts both benign and backdoor patterns, generating new benign features; and \textbf{(2)} an output remapping module that redefines the model’s output domain to guide the input transformations effectively. By further integrating supervised contrastive loss, REFINE enhances the defense capabilities while maintaining model utility. Extensive experiments on various benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our REFINE and its resistance to potential adaptive attacks.

- Meet Christina Shim, IBM’s Chief Sustainability Officer | Sustainability Magazineon 2025-03-28 at 18:18
Christina’s leadership is key in this. She is guiding IBM in reducing climate-related risks, conserving natural resources and developing industry-specific sustainability solutions powered by AI and hybrid cloud technologies. But she sees the long-term upsides as secondary to the necessary voluntary actions that must be taken by companies when it comes to sustainability.“Unfortunately, the world is not in a position to seek sustainability on the basis of economic growth,” she explains, emphasising the need for companies to prioritise things other than the bottom line.Though she is very optimistic about IBM’s progress in the lead up to net zero deadlines.“Sustainability is not just a feel-good word here, it is in our DNA,” she says.Explore the latest edition of Sustainability Magazine and be part of the conversation at our global conference series, Sustainability LIVE. - IBM US Cuts May Run Deeper Than Feared – and the Jobs Are Heading To Indiaby msmash on 2025-03-28 at 09:59
The Register: Following our report last week on IBM’s ongoing layoffs, current and former employees got in touch to confirm what many suspected: The US cuts run deeper than reported, and the jobs are heading to India. IBM’s own careers site numbers back that up. On January 7, 2024, Big Blue listed just 173 open positions in India. On November 23, 2024, there were 2,946 jobs available in the nation. At the time of writing, the IT titan listed 3,866 roles in India. American jobs listed for these three periods are 192, 376, and 333, respectively, though at least among those being laid off, there’s doubt those roles will be filled with job seekers in the States. A current IBMer who won’t be there much longer said that after being told to teach recently hired workers in India “everything I know,” the reward was a resource action, or RA — Big Blue’s euphemism for a layoff. After receiving an RA notification, employees typically have a set period of time to apply for open roles elsewhere in the mega-corporation. But just because there are open positions listed in the US doesn’t mean IBM is making much of an effort to fill them, we are told. Read more of this story at Slashdot.
- Why cloud-native core banking is the future of legacy systems – IBMon 2025-03-28 at 06:25
The UK banking sector is at a crossroads. Customer demands for real-time, personalized services are surging, regulatory frameworks such as open banking are tightening and fintech disruptors are rewriting the rules of engagement. At the heart of this transformation lies the core banking system—a linchpin that determines whether institutions thrive or stagnate. For decades, banks have relied on legacy systems designed for a pre-digital era. These rigid, on-premises platforms, though once revolutionary, now hinder innovation, scalability and competitiveness. The solution? A strategic shift to cloud-native core banking, a reimagined approach that unlocks agility and resilience and puts the customer at the center.
